Community Creators
Voluntary Artists in Northern Ireland
Case Studies celebrating cultural volunteering in rural communities
2005 - The Year of the Volunteer (UK)

A calendar of case studies of volunteers who share their time, talents and skills to enable others in rural communities to enjoy the benefits of taking part in arts activities! 'Community Creators' was prepared as Voluntary Arts Ireland's contribution to the Year of the Volunteer 2005, raising the profile of arts volunteers in Northern Ireland. The case studies are loosely based on the designated theme for each month of the year and include local arts projects, individuals and development bodies.

Fiona Conroy researched and wrote this report on behalf of Voluntary Arts Ireland and as part of her MSc in Rural Development and Project Management.

A print version is available to buy for £7.00 (e-mail order to info@vaireland.org) but please feel free to download it free of charge below. The report, in full or by section, is in pdf format. Please be patient as the documents, particulary the full report, may be slow to load.

Culture, confidence and regeneration in rural Celtic communities

This is the report of the Celtic Neighbours project which aimed to reconnect three Celtic language communities in Wales, Ireland and Scotland.

The themes arising from the project suggest the interconnection of language, culture, community and identity, and the importance of telling our own stories in our own way, the potential to reconcile tradition with innovation and the requirement to develop new skills and new structures for a new century. Cultural tourism, the creative industries, internet broadband and new media outlets such as S4C, TG4 and BBC Alba are all creating a new visibility and exciting new possibilities.

The report features a number of case studies drawn from the project. The Celtic Neighbours Project was co-ordinated by Voluntary Arts Wales - www.vaw.org.uk
