Voluntary Arts online photo gallery on Flickr

We often need pictures of voluntary arts groups for our publications and to accompany news releases. Unfortunately it is often difficult to get hold of any at short notice and publicity opportunities can be missed.

To solve this problem we have set up an online photo gallery on the photo-sharing website Flickr at www.flickr.com/people/voluntaryarts.
(Go to our 'Photostream' at www.flickr.com/photos/voluntaryarts to view the images that have already been uploaded). This gallery will allow voluntary arts and crafts organisations to share photos of their activities in a way that is immediately accessible. In order for this to be a success we ask you to send us any and as many photographs relevant to your organisation as possible.

Please try to send high-resolution images if possible as these are more suitable for print media.

What are the benefits to you?

  • Easily raise your profile - sharing images will help raise the profile of your organisation with the media, policymakers and the general public.
  • Instantly accessibility - journalists, writers, editors and others interested in writing about and promoting the voluntary arts will be able to get hold of your images whenever they need to.
  • Access to a valuable and unique snapshot of the voluntary arts - having photos from a range of different art and craft forms that people can access in one place will provide a wonderfully rich and varied snapshot of the voluntary arts practiced today. Show this to funders, policymakers and potential members.
  • Copyright and usage control - Flickr allows you to decide how people can use your images. A range of copyright options are available, from a strict 'All rights reserved' (which prevents anyone from using your image) to 'Attribution' (which allows people to download and distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation). Clear details of all these licenses are given on the permission form you will be asked to fill in, and on our Flickr group page.
  • It's easy to upload your images - VAN can do the work for you.

Note: We will not upload any images that are not relevant to the voluntary arts and/or are not suitable for the public domain.

Why not join the group for information and discussion?

Join the Doing and making art for the love of it group at:

The group page will be updated with information about the photo gallery and what we are doing with your images. There is also a discussion board for the group and information on how to protect your images on Flickr.

Separate Flickr accounts

You may also decide to set up your own Flickr account (the FAQ section for this is very helpful) to store and organise your own images. You will need a Yahoo! account to do this. It is quick and easy to set one up at www.yahoo.com.

Make sure visitors to Flickr get to see the whole voluntary arts spectrum:

  • Add the Voluntary Arts gallery as a contact - in this way we can share your images and ensure anyone who visits the Voluntary Arts gallery gets to see your images too.
  • Join the group - ‘Doing and making art for the love of it’ (see information above).
