We identified that by working with sheltered housing management schemes, we could run sessions on-site or in partnership creating easy access for residents, enabling the project to grow across the scheme. Sheltered Housing is an ideal location for Older People’s dance classes because each scheme typically includes an accessible, relatively spacious, communal lounge area ideal for both physical activity and social interaction. Offering classes on-site or in partnership with a scheme leads to high participation levels among residents. If you are a resident of CHP or MOAT the housing schemes provide free taxis for residents who wish to attend the sessions.

Classes deliver dance content that would question, mobilise and above all offer the older people a safe environment to practice a shared endeavour. The participants learn about the importance of movement and dance in older age and its effects on the brain and body, as well as been guided in how to adapt material for their varying physical abilities.

Current participants have experienced and explored a broad range of creative ideas as a stimulus for dance and movement, and developed their memory for movement by learning set material, often performed in unison. They have utilised a range of props to enhance their experiences and give added creative opportunity and visual interest.

All this is topped of with time for tea, biscuits and a chat at the end of each session to ensure we speak with our neighbours and friends so no one ever feels alone.
