Opportunities Arts jobs Con Anima Chamber Choir seeks Musical Director Location: AberdeenDeadline: Friday 13 March 2020, 5pm Con Anima is an auditioned amateur chamber choir based in Aberdeen. The group has been going for almost 20 years and is 'self-managing'. At any one time it has about 24 members, all singers, who perform typically four concerts a year, sometimes augmented by guest singers. The repertoire is broad, including large-scale works (e.g. Handel’s Messiah with orchestra), a cappella works (e.g. Morten Lauridsen’s Madrigali), new compositions (e.g. Judith Weir’s The Big Picture) and Christmas carols. As a self-managing group, Con Anima chooses a conductor (currently for one project at a time), rather than the conductor choosing the singers. At present there is no wish to abandon this arrangement. However, at the last AGM, Con Anima agreed in principle to establish a post of Musical Director, to create a more consistent approach to the choir’s overall sound, ensemble and vocal technique, whilst retaining the opportunity to continue working with guest conductors. The purpose of Con Anima’s Musical Director will be to create a consistency of approach by giving advice on matters musical, choral and vocal, and so develop the choir’s standards of musicianship and performance. The proposed responsibilities would include the following: • to give feedback, on matters musical, choral and vocal, to the choir and its members. • to be present at auditions and advise on the selection of new choir members. • to work with the Chair or other appointed Committee member to develop the choirs musical programme, planning concerts 1-2 years ahead. • to direct some rehearsals and help the choir prepare concerts. • to direct (prepare and conduct) at least one concert per year. • to liaise with any guest conductor regarding programme planning and choir preparation. The Musical Director must: • have the necessary musical skills to perform the above responsibilities. • be able to make rehearsals enjoyable. • be able to work collaboratively with the choir and its committee. • have sufficient keyboard skills to facilitate rehearsals. • ideally be able to participate in concerts when he or she is not conducting (for example as singer or accompanist). It is expected that the Con Anima Musical Director will be an ex officio member of the Committee and will be expected to attend Committee meetings. The appointment will be for one year with the expectation of annual re-engagement by mutual agreement. Con Anima will offer an honorarium for preparation of concerts and ongoing work outlined above, together with an agreed fee per concert where the Musical Director is the conductor, plus appropriate expenses. It is expected that initially these payments will be £500 per annum plus £200 per concert conducted. This will be subject to annual renegotiation. The appointment process will include a discussion with members of the Committee and a trial rehearsal if the applicant has not worked with Con Anima previously. For more information please contact Richard Coleman, Chair on email: [email protected] Applicants should indicate their interest in the post, and send a copy of their curriculum vitae, to Richard by Friday 13 March 2020.
