Pushing Out the Boat is a charity in the north-east of Scotland run entirely by volunteers.

It produces a high quality journal of new writing and visual art, featuring contributions from a range of talented writers and artists, some newly published, some well-established.

Writers hail from the local area or around the world, and the magazine’s linguistic mix includes Doric, Scots and a world of eclectic Englishes.

Details of the latest issue, their 14th edition, can be found here

The beautiful front cover was gifted by 2016 V&A winner, Tom Hammick, whose print ‘Violetta and Alfredo's Escape’ was inspired by La Traviata during his time as artist-in-residence at English National Opera.
