We're making new music and art together celebrating local people and places

If you live in the Ballymena, Carrick or Larne area and you think it’s time to turn over a new leaf, to look to a new horizon, to see your place differently and find new connections – to celebrate what’s great about here and its people – then help us open some doors!

Opening Doors is an art and music project in collaboration with Mid and East Antrim Borough CouncilWall2Wall Music, Queens University, Belfast and Voluntary Arts Ireland to make new music and art with local people from Ballymena, Larne, Carrick and surrounding areas.

Opening Doors started back in April 2018 with Music workshops across the borough.

Local people have helped to create a new sound design piece by recording, editing and manipulating sounds using music technology.

Larne Music Yard have held a Summer Workshop in which young people came together to write new songs

Composer Sarah Murphy and librettist Colin Hassard are in the process of writing a piece for the Whitehead Orchestra and a community chorus involving Island Voices and others. Creative citizens from Ballymena, Larne and Carrick have contributed stories and words which will inspire the new work.

This new work will receive its world premier alongside the premiers of the new songs written by the young people from Larne Music Yard in the final music performance which will take place on Saturday 24th November in the MacNeill Theatre, Larne.

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council have recruited 4 Artists/Facilitators to create new art to transform the entrances of key community buildings across the Mid and East Antrim area.

Opening Doors is a platform for you as a creative citizen of Mid and East Antrim to open the door to your neighbour and to the world – to say ‘come on in – you’re welcome.’

We want to involve everyone with a passion for music and art in the area, whatever level of experience.

Currently you can join the community chorus being put together with Island Voices to sing in a world premier with the Whitehead Orchestra, Larne Music Yard and soloists Sarah Richmond and Steven Irwin to take place in the MacNeill Theatre, Larne on 24th November 2018.  We are looking for singers aged 16 upwards who enjoy meeting new people. Previous singing experience will be helpful but is not essential. To register click here

So dive on in and get involved - we're looking for partner groups, artists, musicians, writers and curious and imaginative people who want to make a difference.
