Up For Arts

Up for Arts is an exciting project which aims to get people involved in the arts and crafts and increase community engagement. It harnesses the power of speech-based radio to raise the profile of volunteering and inspire people to get creative in their area. Up For Arts broadcasters currently connect audiences with creative activities through BBC Radio in Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria.

Up for Arts in BBC Radio Merseyside benefits from free radio airtime. The project produces a wide range of broadcasting including radio features, trailers and promotions as well as stories about arts participation and volunteering to inspire and motivate listeners. All materials are produced by Up for Arts Broadcast and Helpline Manager, Helen Jones.

Features direct listeners to the radio station helpline which is run by a 15-strong volunteer team, affectionately known as the A-Team! They refer listeners to amateur arts groups all over Liverpool where hundreds of volunteering opportunities exist. They are also able to give advice and information about arts participation.

Up For Arts also runs arts taster events and workshops to engage with BBC Radio Merseyside listeners, hard to reach communities and priority groups.

These enjoyable occasions help people to see the health, social and community benefits of arts participation and volunteering. Participants regularly come away with new skills, greater social confidence and new friends!

The project is funded by a Liverpool PCT through their decade of Health and Wellbeing Decade of Health and Wellbeing and is based on the Five Ways to Wellbeing established by New Economics Foundation.

Up for Arts in BBC Radio Lancashire aims to raise the profile of the voluntary and amateur arts and inspire people to get active, artistic and connected. Through creative programming, including arts campaigns and stories about arts involvement, we aim to inspire and motivate communities across Lancashire.

Linked to the campaigns are a wide range of ‘taster’ activities with a range of arts partners. These are designed to ignite the creative spark, helping people see the health, social and community benefits of arts engagement. Those who take part regularly come away with new skills, greater social confidence and new friends!

If you are an arts group or arts umbrella body and you want to showcase what you do, recruit more members, or get your message across – please contact us. We are happy to discuss what we can do to support you. This may mean linking you to other arts networks, incorporating your group within a wider arts campaign or hooking you into our arts training programme. We are also eager to have your contact details so we can refer listeners onto you.

If you have been inspired by an Up for Arts feature and want to take part or find out more- give the Help Desk a call. They’ll be able to help you find art groups and activities close to where you live that you might like to join. They can also let you know about up and coming Up for Arts taster events and training workshops.

There is something out there for you … whatever your talent, age or ability.
